1st Day of Spring Scavenger Hunt

Well, it was actually the 3rd day (today) of spring before we headed out on the Auld-Brokaw Trail for our scavenger hunt. What a gorgeous afternoon that greeted us!! We were quick to shed our coats for the lighter long sleeve shirts and jackets. Today's hunt was a continuation of the first day of fall and winter scavenging done earlier in the school year.

March Chapel

Our March chapel was held on Friday. Pastor Dani Jo Ninke, Christ the King Lutheran Church, was the speaker. She talked about Easter and the new life that Christ's death and resurrection gives us. April's chapel will be our Easter/Spring Program which will be held on Friday, April 23rd at 7pm. Pastor Joe Mason from Kingsway Christian (Yankton) will be the speaker.

Your Special Gift by Max Lucado

The MVCA fourth graders lent their voices for this project. Our Easter/Spring play (April 23rd at 7pm) is adapted from this book.

Semper Fi - "Always Faithful"

One of our second grade students just returned from San Diego where he watched his brother graduate from Marine boot camp. The new graduate has returned home to South Dakota with his family for a few days and spent some time at MVCA. He passed around pictures, medals he earned, and talked about his experience at boot camp. Thank Derek for your visit and your service to our country!!

That A Boy, Jake!

Mike Gillis stopped by MVCA with Jake last Tuesday (March 9th) to give the kids and staff tips on training a dog. But first, they had to show off a few tricks which included some of the students. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit!! Thank you, Mr. Gillis and Jake, for sharing your talents with us at MVCA.

Iditarod Update - Thursday, March 11th

The first musher to reach the half-way point (Cripple) was Dallas Seavey. He arrived at 1:26am today, March 11th. He will receive the Dorothy G. Page Award consisting of a beautiful trophy and $3,000 in gold! Congratulations, Mr. Seavey!! Other Iditarod news coming to us today is the fact that one of the mushers we are following scratched (dropped out of the race). We are unsure as to why Kathleen Frederick scratched, but hope to find out soon!

Iditarod Update - Monday, March 8th

Many of the mushers the K-1 class are following have taken their first 2-3 hour rest putting them in the 17th-26th place. For these veteran mushers, this seems to be the "right" place for them. Are they allowing the top ten mushers to break the trail for them and thus making it easier (physically) for their dog teams?

Follow the action at www.iditarod.com.

Who Will Give Me $100??

SOLD! ~ This was heard in Mrs. Frederick's room this afternoon as Mr. Kirby Hofer came to help auction off Iditarod mushers. Students earned Iditarod money over the past few weeks and today was the big day to bid and win the musher of choice. Mr. Hofer got a workout as it took quite a bit of auctioneering charm (getting down on a knee) to convince some bidders. The Iditarod race begins tomorrow in Alaska. The MVCA kindergarten and first graders will be tracking their newly acquired mushers very closely. We will keep you updated here, so check back starting on Monday.

Celebrating Dr. Suess's Birthday at MVCA

It was a big day on Tuesday with the celebration of Dr. Suess's birthday. The students headed to the library where the "Cat in the Hat" read to the students. They also enjoyed a hat birthday cake. Back in the classroom there was green eggs and ham to enjoy. Students painted Suess hats and read many, many Dr. Suess books.
